‘Cutting class has never been bloodier’

Ditch Day Massacre – aka Ditch Day – is a 2013 American slasher horror feature film directed by Joe Hendrick from a screenplay written by Daniel P. Coughlin and Ryan Coughlin. The Water Tree Media production stars Bill Oberst Jr., Katy Foley, Zach Silverman. Lynn Lowry has a cameo role.

Plot:

Convinced by her boyfriend, Jenny Bilson, a high school senior and perfect daughter to a veteran police detective, ditches class for a day of innocent fun. She and her five friends will soon discover that the one mistake she is unaware of making is about to haunt her in a very violent way, as her past returns for revenge…

Reviews:

” …many of the minor characters are just a line or two away from being butchered. A revenge plotline can be unpacked in a few minutes and mystery is lacking in this production. Very indie in scope, Ditch Day Massacre offers a few gory scenes in Acts II and III and not much else.” 28 Days Later Analysis

Ditch Day Massacre is one of the better low-budget slasher flicks that I have seen this year! Trust me, I watch a lot of these and this far supersedes most. I rate this one right up there with HazMat, Blood Runs Cold and Bloody Bloody Bible Camp […] It’s a fun, revenge based and blood soaked throwback to 80’s slasher films…” AdamtheMovieGod

“Although several of the scenes are slow and could have been utilized better to further the story or build characters, the practical gore effects are fantastic. This is one incredibly bloody movie and if you were worried about not seeing it all? Fear not. Every gut ripping axe-wielded moment culminates in a serious amount of fake blood and brilliantly placed appliances.” Gores Truly

” …once the slaughter begins the initial awkwardnesses of the establishing scenes get forgotten. Joe Hendrick keeps things going with a reasonable energy. The pace is much tighter, the blood flows, there is a moderate degree of suspense and some snappily sarcastic dialogue. The only minus is the cheap and unconvincing gore effects…” Moria

The film is released on DVD in the UK by Lightning Pictures as Hellbound on April 29, 2019.

Cast and characters:

  • Bill Oberst Jr. … Vick Taddler
  • Katy Foley … Jenny Bildon
  • Zach Silverman … Mike
  • Morgan Benoit … Officer Finch
  • Lynn Lowry … Mrs. Donattucci – Exposure; Last American Horror Show; Terror Tales; Cat People; Shivers, et al
  • Gregory DePetro … Dale Bilson (as Greg Depetro)
  • Suzanne Gutierrez … Helen Bilson
  • Kyle Morris … Bill
  • Pandie Suicide … Trina
  • Gabriel De Santiago … Max (as Gabriel De Santi)
  • Samantha Dawn … Cathy
  • Brad Potts … Mann
  • Tara Gerard … Officer Laymon

‘Fear will eat you alive’

The Green Inferno is a 2013 horror film directed by Eli Roth (HostelHostel: Part II; Cabin Fever) from a screenplay co-written with Guillermo Amoedo, based on Roth’s storyline, and inspired by Italian jungle shockers such as Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox.

The movie stars Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Magda Apanowicz and Sky Ferreira.

The Green Inferno had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013, however its release in 2014 was stalled by financial difficulties. Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal ActivityInsidious) finally stepped in and released it theatrically on September 25, 2015. Eli Roth’s video announcement with Jason Blum is on Facebook

On 12th February 2016, the film was released to cinemas in the UK by eOne.

A group of college students take their humanitarian protest from New York to the Amazon jungle, only to get kidnapped by the native tribe they came to save: a tribe that still practices the ancient rite of cannibalism, and has a healthy appetite for intruders…

The-Green-Inferno

Reviews:

“Despite its few missteps, The Green Inferno works as both a gut-punch horror film and a distressingly downbeat adventure story, one that features both simple horrific pleasures and a small dash of socio-political food-for-thought regarding who the real “savages” are when all is said and done.” Scott Weinberg, FEARnet

“Roth has put together a crew comprised mostly of Chilean filmmakers, so even though the film is an American production, he has managed to achieve an unique atmosphere and look that fits perfectly with the mood and gives the jungle scenes the right sense of oppressive craziness, and not something looking like a typical Hollywood production.”Guillem Rosset, Twitch

“I don’t know if my laughter was a result of Roth crafting an effective black comedy, or if it was employed as a psychological defense mechanism against such deranged, uncompromising imagery. But I guess I’d rather be uncomfortable than bored.” John Serba, Michigan Live

Green-Inferno-Photos-03

“Ultimately, The Green Inferno resuscitates cannibal movies in a way that they possibly need to be — even if only as an alternative to ghost stories and slasher films — but doesn’t make a lasting impression. And when you’re serving up as unique and decidedly exotic a feast as Roth is here, it comes as a letdown to leave the audience without a strong taste in its mouth, good or bad.” Todd Gilchrist, The Wrap

” … empty cynicism isn’t a substitute for well-reasoned critique, and Roth winds up looking more clueless than the so-called “social justice warriors” he’s trying to satirize.” Geoff Berkshire, Variety

Green Inferno’s scenes of gore and repulsion make up for its lackadaisical plot and lackluster characters, who you will ultimately actually enjoy seeing ripped to shreds.” Gregory Wakeman, CinemaBlend

Go Goa Gone is a 2013 Indian comedy horror feature film directed by Krishna D.K. and Raj Nidimoru from a screenplay co-written with Sita Menon. The Illuminati production stars Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari, Puja Gupta and Hardik Malaviya.

Plot:

A group of friends, just looking to have a good time in a rave party on a remote island in Goa, find out that the island is infested with zombies…

Reviews:

“Das and Khemu have a great rapport and do their best to carry the film. Tiwari’s character seems shoehorned in to make self-aware jokes about being the friend who always gets killed first in horror films. Pooja Gupta fits in better as Luv’s new love interest, Luna. Her presence sparks some amusing conflict between Luv and Hardik, as they compete over her in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.” Access Bollywood

The very difficult balance of making a Bollywood zombie film is handled with extraordinary aplomb by Raj & DK who take the opportunity to create something fresh out of a genre that feels like it has run its course in the west […] While the film is great, it is so different that audiences just may not know what to do with it.” J Hurtado, Screen Anarchy

” …works best in its earliest stages when it’s merely a comedy dependent upon rapid-fire dialogue and word play. Once the reanimated corpses start piling up (aided by fairly shoddy make-up and CGI), it quickly becomes monotonous and repetitive — though at least there’s colorful cinematography and snappy music keep things lively.” Michael Smith, White City Cinema

Go Goa Gone is a pleasant watch, and despite the innumerable scenes depicting flesh and gore, doesn’t leave one with an urge to vomit. The dialogues are witty and are mostly responsible for invoking a laugh. Sense, logic and sensibility be damned – go ‘keel dead peepal’!” Ananya Bhattacharya, Zee News

  • Saif Ali Khan … Boris
  • Kunal Khemu … Hardik

‘Hide the children’

The La Llorona Curse aka Her Cry: La Llorona Investigation is a 2013 American found footage horror feature film photographed and directed by Damir Catic (The Other Side; short: The Lost) from a screenplay co-written with co-producer Ron Gelner. The latter also stars alongside Nichole Ceballos and James Ezrin.

Plot:

The father of a missing teen contacts the creators of a reality show called ‘Paranormal Legends’ to inquire about one of their episodes from a past season, claiming that show had something to do with his daughter Tina’s disappearance.

In order to help the father, the creator of the series James Roberson and his producer Brian, along with newcomer to the show Andrea, took a trip to the place where some say La Llorona (The Weeping woman) was seen. They decided to film the new season there to help shed some light on Tina’s disappearance.

Not listening to numerous warnings and facing unseen forces, their trip to the place ‘where it all began’ turns into a horrifying nightmare. The police found seventeen hours of tapes from season four…

Review:

“I would recommend this film only to people that are curious to see a different take on the story of la llorona, but I do warn that the acting is extremely bad and that if you can get past that, and the at times complex set up of the plot, then it could be a somewhat bearable and even mildly entertaining film.” The Chicana/o Gothic

“There are a lot of dirt cheap found footage horror films that work, this one does not. This may be the worst “movie” ( I’m being generous by calling it that) that I’ve ever watched. Truly, laughably horrible.” H. Campbell

Cast and characters:

  • Nichole Ceballos … Tina
  • James Ezrin … James Robertson
  • Ron Gelner … Interviewer
  • Everardo Guzman … Brian
  • Parker Riggs … Father Albert
  • Gabrielle Santamauro … Andrea

Dabbe: The Possession – original title: Dabbe: Cin Çarpmasi – is a 2013 Turkish supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Hasan Karacadag.

The J-Plan production stars Furkan Bayraktar, Elcin Atamgüc, Mehmet Canbeg, Sabriye Günüç, Sultan Köroglu Kiliç, Oguzhan Kocakli, Cansu Kurgun, Irmak Örnek and A. Murat Özgen.

Plot:

Ahead of her wedding, Kübra is possessed by demons. When an examination reveals more horror, her friend, a psychiatrist, tries to perform an exorcism…

Reviews:

“Karacadag has too little story for more than two hours of playing time. Trimmed to under 100 minutes would have been easily possible. In spite of very exciting sequences, I sometimes found it difficult to maintain concentration. Nevertheless, a look is worthwhile in any case, because the film does occasionally provide for some fear and terror.” Florian Halbeisen, 100 Year of Terror [translated from German]

“The film is a little long at 2 hours 14 minutes but it gets really intense near the middle and end and is a lot of fun. Karacadag has upped the scare factor from his 2012 entry, Dabbe: Bir cin vakasi, also about vengeful genies. He knows how to use the camcorder and lighting to maximum effect…” Victory is Mine Blast

‘Some secrets should stay buried.’

Mortal Remains is a 2013 American mockumentary horror feature film  written and directed by Mark Ricche and Christian Stavrakis.

Mortal Remains 2: Cult Movie is currently filming in 2019.

Plot:

A documentary focusing on the life, brief career, and mysterious death of Maryland filmmaker Karl Atticus, referred to by some as the “godfather of the slasher film.”

Features interviews with various historians and aficionados including Eduardo Sanchez, director of The Blair Witch Project, who in a 2008 interview posited the question: Why, for nearly four decades, has Atticus’s story been practically eradicated from the annals of cinematic history?

Reviews:

“Mark and Christian deliver a solid tale on a low budget that doesn’t fall into the usual pitfalls of bad acting, a weak narrative, and an unsatisfactory conclusion […] the story takes several intriguing turns until the outstanding ending that delivers an added chill and one hell of an exclamation point.” Crash Palace

“Atticus films and and newspaper articles from the 1970’s help take the audience along for the ride. The documentary technique keeps things interesting and some well-placed, appropriate found-footage adds to the mystery. Mortal Remains offers an original concept with excellent storytelling.” Horror Geek Life

“A few horror scenes exist though not much gore, again this production centers more on mystery and thriller, with the ability of sound storytelling […] a bit of pacing and a few continuity issues occur, but not enough to ruin the overall conceptual design of flick.” Baron Craze, The Horror Times

“Cinematography is about average, but that doesn’t really matter when you glue together the film’s overall journey. Acting really is acceptable, from start to finish, and fits easily into the motion picture – no overacting, no irritating teenager shit – just believable performances throughout.” Top Found Footage Films

The Employer – USA, 2013

‘How far will they go to get the job?’

The Employer is a 2013 American macabre thriller feature film written and directed by Frank Merle. The movie stars Malcolm McDowell, David Dastmalchian, Paige Howard, Billy Zane and Michael DeLorenzo.

Review:

The Employer isn’t a hugely unique film… but it sure is damn entertaining! In the same fashion as Saw, Would You Rather, Hunger and Cube, The Employer is all about survival. How far would you go (in this instance) to land a dream job?

Frank Merle displays his gift of delivering the suspense and helpless trepidation with The Employer, a fantastically written movie that tests job candidates on their ambition to win at all costs.

Starring the astounding Malcolm McDowell as the employer, five applicants are interviewed for a coveted position at a highly revered firm – all of which are granted a final round before the selection is made. However, the final interview will be the last for four of the five candidates and not just for the open position!

Each contender is literally kidnapped the night before his/her scheduled interview, and wake up in a locked “escape room” with one goal set up by the employer… kill your way out – land the job.

Immediately, the five trapped interviewees begin to share background information as to how they ended up in this deathly situation. Sandra (Howard) is a former business owner, striving to make her mark in the corporate world.

Keith (DeLorenzo) is the smart mouthed, egocentric manipulator who feels he is the most deserving of the position. And no one overlooks the aloof wallflower, James (Dastmalchian) who does his best to keep the group focused on getting out of the cell through collective teamwork.

All the while they strategize their far-fetched plan to escape unharmed, the employer watches on with intrigue and a glimmer of evil satisfaction as the young detainees begin to turn on one another.

With the focus remaining on McDowell to lead the way to salvation, The Employer was set up for success as his charming charisma never strays from that snarky sneer. He is once again, outstanding!

Merle sets up the story for several twists and turns, more unpredictable than the norm. It’s an audition for the dog eat dog world, where there is truly no clear cut winner in the end. In the words of John Quinones: “What would you do?”

‘Evil remains’

House of Dust is a 2013 American supernatural horror feature film directed by A.D. Calvo (Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl; The Midnight Game) from a screenplay co-written with Alyssa Alexandria and Nevada Grey. The movie stars Inbar Lavi, Steven Grayhm, Eddie Hassell and Holland Roden.

Plot:

College students exploring an abandoned insane asylum accidentally shatter canisters holding the cremains of former mental patients. Inhaling the dusty ash filling the air, they’re soon possessed by the souls once held within them. One is a convicted serial killer from 1950…

In the UK, Miracle Media is releasing the film on DVD on 8 July 2019 as The Haunting of Redding Hospital.

Reviews:

“The film is professionally shot, edited, and passes as a polished finished feature. Yet there is nothing to its cinematic style besides traditional three-point lighting schemes and a predictable pattern of establishing exterior, two shot, close-up, rinse and repeat.  It functions well enough, but it is as basic as can be.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

Godzilla even gets an eye into the House of Dust

“It appears that director A.D. Calvo has access to some interesting locations, so it’s awful that he didn’t have much of a story with which to work. And, when you note that it took four people (including Calvo) to “write” said “story”, it’s even sadder […] But, when you are left with bad acting, little story, and no character development, it’s difficult for the viewer to remain committed (pun intended).” Mike Long, DVD Sleuth

House-of-Dust-reviews-movie-film-horror-Steven-Grayhm

“Inbar Lavi as Emma is the standout, making us empathize with her character without having to overdo it. Technically, the film looks good but not too slick, and there’s a bit of an 80s Silent Scream-type vibe to it. After an attention-getting opening sequence, House of Dust settles into yawn-inducing boredom until it slowly makes its way toward being fairly entertaining again.” HK and Cult Film News

House-of-Dust-reviews-movie-film-horror-5

The movie looks beautiful, well-photographed by Christo Bakalov but like I stated earlier, nothing engrossing or riveting really happens […] no amount of good performances or admirable photography can save a movie if the script is not there to help back them up.” James McDonald, Red Carpet Crash

House-of-Dust-reviews-movie-film-horror-serial-killer

“Character’s talking to dogs or bickering in a psychology class do not create any sense of excitement, nor intrigue. Instead, one might look at the film’s runtime as more of a countdown and it is not a countdown to terror; House of Dust is a very subdued affair.” Michael Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis
